Mikis Theodorakis

When they shake hands / The bells will ring
Poetry: Giannis Ritsos from Romiosyni
Music: Mikis Theodorakis

Live recording from a concert of solidarity to Serbia against NATO's attacks given at Syntagma Square, Athens.

Reminds times when Theodorakis led the people to the streets whith his music.

Poor thing, he makes an error in the transition from one song to the other and atributes that to old age. He was about 80 then.

When they shake hands, the sun is certain for the world
When they smile, a small swallow comes out of their wild beard
When they are killed, life continues up the hill
with flags and drums

Send, sky of mine, a bird
Vocals: Dimitris Mitropanos

Perhaps the most moving Zeïbekiko-dance song of Mikis about the feelings of an immigrant (like me).

...
Send, sky of mine, a bird
to bring patience to mother
endows to my little sister
and to my little girl-neighbour
a sweet kiss on the lips
...

Canto General
Poetry: Pablo Neruda
Music: Mikis Theodorakis
Conductor: Mikis Theodorakis
Solists: Arja Saijonmaa, Petros Pandis, Maria Faranduri

Various concerts, recent or earlier, the fist one from Chile, at last!

The votary
Poetry: Giannis Ritsos (18 little songs for the bitter patria)
Music: Mikis Theodorakis
Vocals: Giorgos Dalaras

Here, the birds go silent
the bells are silent too
the bitter Greek goes silent also
together with his dead

and on the stone of silence
he sharpens his nails
alone and helpless
votary of freedom

The votary / Don't cry for Hellenism
Poetry: Giannis Ritsos (18 little songs for the bitter patria)
Music: Mikis Theodorakis
Vocals: Mikis Theodorakis
...
Don't cry for Hellenism
when it bents
with the nife in the bone
with the leash around the neck

Don't cry for Hellenism
Here it jumps up again
from the beggining
and grows up, and grows wild
and forks the beast with the fork of the sun

I thank them all for this rare and moving performance.
